The Itamapako project is conceived by Educational Co-operation Society (ECS). The initiative is aimed at recuperating the space of civil society in the rural areas of Nigeria. It is designed to achieve this objective by fostering community processes that facilitate social development and equity in Abidagba, Ereji, Iloti and Iroto communities of Itamapako area of Ogun State.
In other words, the project is geared towards fostering the community initiatives and activities that guarantee active presence of women in society, particularly in decision-making processes at rural levels. Through capacity building and search for consensus, which allows advancement in terms of gender equity and democratic governance, community leaders are aided to come to acquire attitudinal changes, that dispose to social development and practice of gender equality in communities. The expected results from the program include:
•Incorporation of civic and gender studies in the official curriculum of most public primary schools in Itamapako & Ijebu-Ode LGA.
•Community formulation and execution of two proposed community development initiatives, which captured the priorities set by the community women.
• A Community Development Forum (CDF), formed by the community leaders, approves a 5-year Action Plan, which has objectives and indicators, and represent the interest of the whole population. Such CDF endorsement must be endorsed by at least 2/3 of the women in the CDF, for its validity.
